Almost every couples app is free to download. Far fewer stay useful once you decline the subscription. Here are the nine that come up most often, judged on what the two of you get without paying.

LuviDuo

Best if you want widgets and play more than structured relationship exercises. The lock screen widgets (a countdown until you meet, how long you have been together, your partner's mood and distance) are what most people find us for. The games and Luvi, the pet you hatch and raise together, are all in the free version. The trade-off is that the free version shows ads; Premium removes the ads before moments and games and covers both partners. See the widgets or read what is free.

Pookie

A couples app with widgets, a shared pet, questions and games. Its App Store listing says there are no ads, and that one subscription covers both partners and adds all 10,000+ questions, online games and the shared whiteboard. If no ads matters most to you, that is a real difference from LuviDuo. Source: Pookie on the App Store.

Widgetable

By far the most rated app here. It is built for friends as well as couples, with lock screen and home screen widgets and pets you raise together. Its listing offers a subscription for unlimited access to all features. Source: Widgetable on the App Store.

Paired

The most structured of the group: daily questions, quizzes and guided journeys built with relationship experts. It suits couples who want to work on communication. Premium adds the guided content. Source: Paired on the App Store.

Pookie vs LuviDuo

These two are the closest. Both have couple widgets, a pet and games, both are free to download and both work on iPhone and Android. The differences, from each app's own listing:

The honest answer: try both for a day with your partner and keep the one you both actually open.
